Wounded U.S. soldier greeted upon arrival in New York City from Europe. U.S. Private first class Lee Harper, who was wounded in the European theater of war, is greeted by his two-and-a-half-year-old sister, Janet, whom he had never seen before, on his arrival in New York City on Aug. 1, 1945. His mother, Mrs. Jessie Harper (right) and his wife, Elizabeth (rear) look on. Private Harper was the first soldier to leave the U.S. Army hospital plane which carried 20 wounded veterans from Europe. Although nearly 40,000 sick and wounded soldiers have been landed at New York's La Guardia Field since April, 1944, this was the first time relatives had been permitted to greet the men upon their arrival at the airport. Private Harper has been in the U.S. Army five years and went overseas two years ago with the Eighty-second Airborne Division. He was wounded in Normandy on June 30, 1944, and holds the Distinguished Service Cross.
