U.S. soldier meets his son for the first time. U.S. Private first class Fred Doughty, home from the European theater of war for a 30-day furlough before heading for the Pacific, meets his six-month old son, Frederic James, for the first time. Mrs. Doughty looks on in delight. Private Doughty is one of 14,289 officers and men of the famed U.S. 86th "Blackhawk" Division, who in 42 days of combat captured 77,000 German soldiers. They served with four of the five American armies in the field, with the 15th in the Battle of the Rhine, the First in the Battle of the Ruhr pocket, and the Third and Seventh in the Battle of Bavaria. When their furloughs are over, members of the Division will be shipped to the Pacific under the reployment program for the transfer of 3,000,000 U.S. troops to fight the Japanese.
