U.S. Marine Lieutenant welcomed after three years in Pacific Theater of War. U.S. Marine Lieutenant Clark R. Kaltenbaugh walks into his mother's arms as he arrives at his home in the northeastern U.S. state of Pennsylvania after three years' service in the Pacific Theater of War. He arrived home August 13, 1945, as the world awaited the Japanese reply to U.S. Secretary of State James F. Byrnes' message, which expressed the viewpoint of the U.S., the United Kingdom, the Soviet Union and China, that the Japanese surrender offer of August 10, would be acceptable provided an Allied Supreme Commander ruled Japan through the authority of Emperor Hirohito.
