U.S. veterans aided by special legislation. Legislation passed by the U.S. Congress to benefit U.S. war veterans includes provisions for education, the right to reemployment in previous jobs, unemployment compensation, government guarantee of 50 per cent on loans up to $4,000, for purchase of a home or for business, and special vocational training to overcome physical handicaps. Veterans who were less than 25 years of age when they entered the service are entitled to four years of education, with the government paying up to $500 annually for tuition, plus allowances for living expenses. Disabled veterans of any age also are entitled to a maximum of four years of education or vocational rehabilitation, with compensation set at a maximum of $92 a month of their veteran's disability pension, whichever is higher. All veterans are entitled to a one-year educational refresher course. A government agency, the Veterans Administration, administers most of the special legislation designed to benefit veterans.
