New aircraft carrier launched for U.S. Navy. The U.S. Navy's now aircraft Franklin slides down the ways (1943) at a shipyard on the U.S. Atlantic Coast while a group of WAVES (Women appointed for Volunteeer Emergency Service) of the U.S. Naval Reserve look on. The director of the WAVES, Lieutenant Commander Mildred H. Mc.Afee, christened the carrier, which is the fourth ship of the Navy to boar the name Franklin.
