German generals reach Moscow as prisoners of war. German generals, captured in the Russian's great Summer offensive wait under guard on a Moscow square to lead a march of 57,000 German prisoners through the Sovjet capital, on July 17, 1944. Other remnants of defeated German armies were trying to escape from the White Russian front, where they had been trapped by swiftly advancing Soviet forces. During the Allied campaign in Northern France, and the co-ordinated Russian offensive that followed, the Germans, by July 17, had lost 37 general officers. On the eastern front, 20 were captured, four were killed in action and four others died accidentally. On the western front, in Normandy, six German generals were killed, and two generals and one rear admiral were captured by the Alllies.
