U.S. tanks and a troop-filled truck move forward frontline positions in the Anzio beachhead area, south of Rome, on the west coast of Italy, where Allied Fifth Army forces launched a new offensive against the Germans on May 23, 1944. The beachhead drive against the enemy was opened on the 13th day of the powerful Allied offensive in Central Italy where the Germans had been driven from strong defensive positions.
