U.S. and Canadian troops wear camouflage paint for raid in Italy. Two Canadians and one American (right), members of a United States-Canadian infantry raider unit operating in Italy, are ready with darkened faces to carry out a mission behind German lines. The special commando-trained unit infiltrated enemy lines on numerous missions, operating from the Anzio beachhead area, on the west coast of Italy, from where Allied Fifth Army forces slashed northwestward in a drive to Rome, the Italian capital, which was liberated from German control on June 4, 1944.
