U.S. salvage experts clear Naples harbor. A U.S. Navy salvage crew is shown at work in Naples Harbor, Italy, clearing it of the wreckage of ships wrecked by retreating Germans in an effort to destroy the harbors'usefulness to Allied shipping. (December, 1943). The same salvage experts who cleared the harbors of Tunis, Bizerte and Palermo and kept supply lines clear for advancing Allied troops are at work at Naples. Directing the task is Commoderor William A. Sullivan, Chief of Salvage for the U.S. Navy whose righting of the Normandie after she burned and capsized at her New York City pier is considered one of the greatest salvage achievements in history.
