1944
German prisoners of war in Italy. Two German soldiers await transportation to a prisoner-of-war encampment from the battle sector near Cisterna, in western Italy, where they were captured by troops of the Allied Fifth Army who ripped through fortified enemy defense positions in the drive from the Anzio beachhead area. Cisterna fell to the Allies on may 25, 1944. Between May 11, 1944, when Allied armies opened their major offensive against the Germans in Italy, and May 30, more than 15,000 enemy soldiers were taken prisoner.
