University of Siena reopens. Colonel Robert G. Kirkwood (right), Regional Commissioner of the Toscania region in Italy, shakes hands with the new rector of the University of Siena, Professor Mari Baracci, as the famous university opened for its 704th academic year November 26, 1944. Before the liberation of Siena Allied troops in July, there were only about 300 students in attendance. Today, with no political restrictions, the university has nearly 700 enrolled. The city of Siena turned out in force into the Piazza del Campo to watch the procession into the Palazzo, where the reopening ceremony was held.
