Romans cheer their liberation and U.S. War writer gets a grateful kiss. Romans turn out en masse to cheer their liberation from German control and, in the midst of the jubilant throng, a U.S. war correspondent is embraced by two happy women, on June 5, 1944, the day after the enemy was routed from the Italian capital by the Allies. Roman girls and children tossed flowers at U.S. and British armored columns racing north through the city in pursuit of the fleeing enemy, while special Allied units set up relief stations in the Eternal City to dispense food, clothing, and medicine to civilians made destitute under German occupation.
