German mines cleared from airfield near Rome. U.S.
German mines cleared from airfield near Rome. U.S. Army aviation engineers carefully remove an 800-pound mine, planted by the Germans in the grounds of the Ciampino Airport, southwest of Rome, before the enemy was forced to abandon the field during the Allied drive which liberated the Italian capital on June 4, 1944. After removing enemy mines and restoring damaged facilities, the Allies were using the airport as a base for the continuing aerial operations against the retreating enemy.
