Grim reminder of German reprisals in Greece. The scar of a bullit that went through her shoulder mars the back of this Greek woman, who was nursing her nine-month old child when the Germans started their massacre of 1,000 persons in the Greek village of Distomo. The bullet crushed the infant's head before piercing the mother's shoulder. As revealed in a Greek report, the Germans started their bloody slaughter of the villages on June 10, 1944, in reprisal for the death of 30 German soldiers in a fight with Greek patriots. Pressed even harder by atrocities such as this, Allied air and ground forces, together with Greek patriots, drove the Germans from all of Greece by by Novenber 4.
