France's underground fortification in the desert.
18 december 1938
France's underground fortification in the desert. This picture was taken by a staff photographer in a forbidden territory on the frontier of French Tunisia and Italian Libya. It shows (in centre) the top of one of the underground fortresses of the "Maginot Line"of the desert, the defences which French military authorities consider impregnable against attack from Libya. The French authorities have brought thousands of colonial troops and French aviation technicians to this district mto reinforce the defences in view of the Italian agitation for the handing over to them of Tunisia.
