B-25 Allied plane lays smoke screen to cover landings near Borneo. An Allied plane lays a smoke screen to cover the Australian landings April 29, 1945, on Sadau, a small island six miles northwest of Tarakan off the east coast of Borneo. The Sadau landings were preliminary to large-scale landings the next day on Tarakan, one of the world's richest oil fields. U.S. Navy units transported the Australians and supported the landings on the oil-rich island which, for months, had been cut off from Japan's home islands by Allied air and naval might. By May 23, the Australians had virtually secured Tarakan and were engaged in mopping-up operations.
