U.S. troops patrol Northern New Guinea Lake. U.S. infantrymen, riding in an amphibious tank, patrol the shores of Sentani Lake near newly won Hollandia, in Northern New Guinea. Their tank, equally at home on land or water, is armed with anti-aircraft and machine guns. American assault forces in a three-pronged drive landed along a 150-mile coastal stretch of Northern New Guinea, on April 22, 1944, to wrest control of the towns of Hollandia and Aitape and on four strategic airfields from the Japanese. The U.S. landing operations completed the encirclement of an estimated 60,000 enemy troops in that part of the Southwest Pacific island.
