U.S. army technicians assemble. Motor vehicles in New Guinea.

U.S. army technicians assemble. Motor vehicles in New Guinea. Lined up along both sides of a long assembly line, skilled U.S. soldier technicians put together Army trucks, jeeps, staff cars and other types of automotive equipment at a U.S. Army ordnance base on the Southwest Pacific Island of New Guinea. Each man along the line performs a different operation, adds another part, until, at the end of the line, a new Army vehicle stands assembled ready to go into service. In the immediate foreground (right), a bareheaded soldier adjust a wheel to the chassis while across the line, other soldiers work on the engine and pon forward springs. All the parts were shipped to the base from war plants in the U.S. More than 5,500 motor vehicles have been assembled at this base built on jungle territory wrested from the Japanese.
