First aid given to American wounded on Saipan Island.
First aid given to American wounded on Saipan Island. Injured American soldiers receive emergency treatment on a beach of Saipan Island as the U.S. attack against the Japanese proceeds with unabated fury farther inland on the strategic Marianas base of the Central Pacific. Landing vessels which brought ashore U.S. amphibious forces on June 14, 1944, are still nosed close to the beach, and sandbagged fox holes, dug by the first wave of American troops, are evidences of the initial beachhead assault against the enemy. Japanese defense garrisons, left without naval or air support, were steadily routed from fortified strongpoints and, by July 7, had been driven back to the northern tip of Saipan.
