Wounded U.S. soldier gets blood plasma on way to Saipan field hospital. An American soldier wounded while fighting the Japanese on Saipan Island in the Central Pacific, receives a blood plasma transfusion administered by a medical corpsmen while being transported on a jeep to a field hospital. Quick emergency treatment of Allied wounded has saved many lives on the Pacific, Asiatic and European battlefronts. Within three weeks of their landing on Saipan, U.S. forces had gained control of almost all the strategic base in the Marianas group. It is well within the vital inner defense of the enemy homeland, less than 1,500 miles (2,400 kilometers) from Japan.
