U.S. war photographer rests on Saipan Island. After taking pictures of some of the most furious fighting of the American Pacific campaign, Stanley Troutman, a U.S. war photographer, takes a rest on Saipan Island, strategic Marianas base where Japanese resistance was ended on July 8, 1944. Mr. Troutman sits before the "Saipan Press Club" in Charan-Kanoa, town on the west coast of Saipan, which was captured by American troops shortly after they stormed ashore on June 14, and opened the successful assault against enemy defenders of Saipan, formerly a key island in Japan's inner defense system.
