Saipan children play in U.S. internment camp. Children skip rope in a U.S. civilian refugee camp on Saipan in the Marianas pending rehabilitation of the Central Pacific island which American troops wrested from Japan on July 8, 1944. U.S. civil affairs authorities plan for schools to reopen in September for Chamorran, Japanese and Korean children. While the battle for Saipan was still under way, civil affairs units were rounding up strayed livestock, returning lost personal possessions, planning a democratic election of chiefs among the Chamorros, and restoring freedom of worship to the people who had been under Japanese domination since 1914.
