The main Japanese airfield on Ushi Point, Tinian Island, in the Central Pacific was captured by U.S. forces which landed on the Marianas island on July 23, 1944. In the background is recently won Saipan Island two and a half miles (four kilometers) away. The battle of Tinian was nearing the end on July 31, as U.S. Marines pressed in on remnants of Japanese forces compressed into the island's southern tip.
