U.S. Army engineers launch landing craft in New Guinea. U.S. Army Engineers, lining the ways, wave their hats as an LCM (Landing craft-mechanized) vessel is launched at an assembly yard carved out of virrgin jungle on the coast of New Guinea. The engineers turn out as many as nine craft in 24 hours. LAnding craft of this type participated in amphibious operations on May 18, 1944, which led to the capture of an island in the Wakde group and established a new beachhead nearby on the northern coast of New Guinea, 125 miles west of Hollandia, recently seized from the Japanese.
