Italian Premier visits Ardeatine shrine of Nazi victims.
Italian Premier visits Ardeatine shrine of Nazi victims. Premier Ivanoe Bon Bonomi, newly elected head of the Italian Government (center), leaves the Ardeatine caves outside Rome where the Nazis are alleged to have mowed down 320 Italian civilians in reprisal for the death of 26 Germans from a bomb hurled in Rome March 23, 1944. One of the first official acts of the new Italian Government on its transfer from Salerno to Rome was to visit the graves. Allied officials have appointed a committee to identify the victims and verify the details of the atrocity charge.
