American officer participates in Japanese surrender conference. Major General Stephen J. Chamberlain, U.S. General of the Army Douglas MacArthur's operations officer and assistant chief of staff, participated in the conferences with the sixteen-man Japanese surrender delegation which arrived in Manila on August 19, 1945. General MacArthur's representatives speeded up preliminary talks to assure a quick cessation of all hostilities and arrange an early signing of the surrender terms. On August 14, U.S. President Harry S. Truman announced the unconditional surrender of the Japanese armed forces.
