U.S. Gen. Clark tours Anzio front. U.S. Lieutenant General Mark W. Clark (front, left), commander of the Allied Fifth Army, tours the Anzio front in a jeep with Allied officers shortly before the junction, on May 25, 1944, of the Anzio units under his command with Fifth Army forces driving north from the central Italian front. The combined forces drove steadily northward through German defense positions and by June 1, had penetrated deep into enemy defenses in the Alban Hills. Main point taken in this mountainous sector was Mount Peschio where Allied artillery began bombarding the last thin rim of German mountain defenses standing before the Rome military area.
