U.S. Gen. Clark tours Anzio front. U.S. Lieutenant General Mark W. The combined forces drove steadily northward through German defense positions and by June 1, had penetrated deep into enemy defenses in the Alban Hills. Main point taken in this mountainous sector was Mount Peschio where Allied artillery began bombarding the last thin rim of German mountain defenses standing before the Rome military area.
