U.S. Admiral praised for submarine sinkings. Admiral Royal E. Ingersoll, Commander in Chief of the Atlantic Fleet of the U.S. Navy , pictured at his desk, directed anti-submarine campaign which evoked praise from Frank Knox, U.S. Secretary of the Navy, recently. Of the 60 German submarines sunk in the Atlantic during August, September and October of 1943. Secretary Knox said, U.S. forces under Admiral Ingersoll accounted for 27 of the undersea raiders while British and Canadian units sank the remainder. U.S. Navy carriere-based aircraft sank 21 of the submarined.
