General Mac Arthur greets U.S. War Manpower Commissioner in Manila. U.S. General of the Army Douglas Mac Arthur (right), commander on Allied military forces in the Pacific, greets U.S. War Manpower Commissioner Paul V. McNutt upon the latter's arrival in Manila, capital of the Philippines, on July 20, 1945. Mr. McNutt, who formerly served as U.S. High Commissioner in the Philippines, is visiting the Philippines to make a special survey on health and economic needs in the islands. Before leaving the U.S. on his trip, Mr. McNutt said: 'Nothing we can do in the way of relief and rehabilitation for the Philippine people can begin to repay them for their magnificent achievement in the war in the Pacifc'. The Manpower Commissioner, who is also Federal Security Administrator and as much is responsible for national health and welfare service, will return to Washington, the U.S. capital, early in August to make a personal report on conditions in the Philippines to President Harry S. Truman.
