Veteran U.S. battleship returns with service ribbons. Captain Powell M. Rhea (left) of the U.S. battleship Nevada and Commander Howard A. Yeager, his executive officer, stand on the bridge decorated with service stripes at the warship decks at New York. The Nevada, which supported the Allied landings in France has an enviable war record. The service ribbons include (top row, left tot right), Purple Heart for war damage; Victory ribbon, war of 1914-18; Defense ribbon; (bottom row) Pacific campaign, American theater and European theater. The Nevada was severely damaged during the Japanese sneak attack on Hawaii's Pearl Harbor on Dec. 7, 1941, but was rebuilt to be a more powerful craft than before. She blasted Cherbourg and Toulon among other targets in support of the Allied landings in northern and southern France.
