U.S. President eats with cruiser crew en route to Berlin Conference. U.S. President Harry S. Truman (second from left) stands in line with members of the crew to receive his noon meal aboard the Augusta, U.S. cruiser which carried him across the Atlantic en route to the Berlin Conference. Shown before the steam table in the crew's mess hall are (left to right): Seaman first class Albert Rice, of the President's home town of Independence in the midwestern U.S. state of Missouri; Mr. Truman; an unidentified member of the President's party, and Pharmacist's Mate second class Elmo E. Buck, also of Independence. On July 16, 1945, President Truman, British Prima Minister Winston Churchill and Soviet Premier Josef Stallin opened a series of conferences in Potsdam, a suburb of Berlin, Germany. The chiefs of the foreign affairs departments of the three nations also met.
