Japanese surrender delegates board plane for Manila. Led by Lieutenant General Toraahiro Kawabe (right), vice chief of the Japanese Imperial General Staff, members of the 16-man Japanese surrender delegation board an American C-54 transport plane to 1e Shima for the flight to Manila. The Japanese mission arrived at the Philippines capital on August 19, 1945, five days after U.S. President Harry S. Truman announced Japan's unconditional surrender. The aides of U.S. General of the Army Douglas McArthur, Allied Suppreme Commander, sped the conference to assure a quick cessation of all hostilities and arrange an early signing of the surrender terms.
