Keeping the promise : a Torah's journey
"This is the remarkable story of a tiny Torah, the heroism of three men, and the faith of an entire people. The Torah, smuggled into the Bergen-Belsen concentration camp by a Dutch rabbi, is given to a 13-year-old boy during a secret Bar Mitzvah in the camp's barracks. Knowing he would not survive, the rabbi entrusts the Torah to the boy for safekeeping, asking only that he tell its story. The boy did survive, and years later he told the story of the Torah to Israeli astronaut Ilan Ramon, himself the son of a Holocaust survivor. Ramon asks to take the Torah with him into space. 'It represents more than anything, the ability of the Jewish people to survive,' he said, as he held it aloft while orbiting the earth." — Publisher
