The ghetto men : the SS destruction of the Jewish Warsaw Ghetto - April-May 1943
A history of the Warsaw ghetto uprising presented from the viewpoint of the German SS. Gives a day-by-day account (from 18 April to 16 May 1943) of the German operations in the ghetto, based largely on the Stroop report. Lists the armed bunkers that withstood the SS onslaught. Dwells on the composition of the German units that took part in the suppression of the uprising and the deportation of Jews in May-June 1943 and on the personalities of their leading officers. Assesses the number of German losses in the operation and the numbers of the deported and murdered Jews. Analyzes mistakes made by the German military leadership which allowed the Jews to battle with the SS for such a long time. Contends that the deportation of Jews and the suppression of the uprising were not a difficult military operation for the SS, and also did not in any way effect the German efforts at the frontlines. The book is richly illustrated with photographs and maps. Includes bibliographical references (pages 174-176). 260 pages. : illustrations. ; 29 cm.
