Het kruitvat dat eindelijk ontbrandde : een onderzoek naar beeldvorming in de Nederlandse media rondom de Bosnische oorlog in 1992
This is a study of the Dutch's textual news coverage of the war in Bosnia in the year 1992. The first chapter deals with the academic discussion about representation and the self-representation of the ethnic groups living in former Yugoslavia. I argue that these (self- )representations are based on stereotypes. Special attention has been paid to the so called 'frames'. There are three different frames in which the news-items and stereotypes are placed. The first frame is based on the different ethnicities and the tensions in Bosnia. The second one deals with the comparison with the Second World War and the concept of genocide. The last frame is about the way in which the Muslims are seen as victims and the Serbs and Croats as aggressors. I argue; journalists in Bosnia had influence on these frames because they felt a moral responsibility for the victims. This is called journalism of attachment. Lastly, I examine the international press agencies and the newspaper offices in the Netherlands. They have great influence on the journalists who work in Bosnia and the way in which the news is presented to the public. Masterscriptie Geschiedenis, Universiteit van Amsterdam. pagina's.
