Carolinenstrasse 35 : Geschichte der Mädchenschule der Deutsch-Israelitischen Gemeinde in Hamburg 1884-1942
Traces the history of the Israelitische Töchterschule, supported by the Jewish community of Hamburg between 1884-1942. Pp. 63-103 discusses the Nazi period. After the Nazi rise to power, Jewish students transferred from public schools to Jewish schools. The number of students at the school increased from 596 in 1932 to 730 in 1935. From 1938 the curriculum focused on preparation for emigration. There were workshops for carpentry and gardening, classes for sewing and housekeeping, and courses in language and commerce. From 1939 all Jewish institutions were united under the control of the Gestapo. In October 1941 the deportations began. Among the 76 pupils who remained in 1942, very few managed to avoid deportation, mainly those who were "Mischlinge". In June 1942 the school was closed.
