A description of the author's visit to the main cities of what was once the Habsburg Empire. The section on Vienna refers to the antisemitism of Karl Lueger and to the Waldheim Affair. The last chapter of the book, "Coda: The Dead" (pp. 315-328), is an account of the history of the writer's Jewish ancestors in those three cities.
