Theresienstadt : Hitler's gift to the Jews
Memoirs of a Czech Jew on the period of his internment in Theresienstadt, from early 1942 to September 1944. As an architect working for the technical department, Troller was at first "protected" from transports. Describes life in Theresienstadt, as well as the "Painter Affair", when he and other artists were caught smuggling drawings that revealed the horrors of the camp. As a result, Troller was incarcerated in the former state prison, the Little Fortress. In September 1944, he was deported to Auschwitz. He survived and later emigrated to the U.S. Some of his drawings from Theresienstadt appear in the book.
