Tage, die so quälend sind : Aufzeichnungen eines jüdischen Bürgers aus Gröbenzell im besetzten Amsterdam, September 1942-Januar 1943
Pp. 17-73 contain the author's diary-like notes, which he gave to a friend for safekeeping before his deportation to Auschwitz, where he perished in the gas chambers. He discusses the progression of the war, German atrocities against both Jews and non-Jews in the Netherlands, Dutch solidarity with the Jews, the arrests and deportations, and conditions in Westerbork. Reflects on the brutality of the German character and the hatred it arouses in the world, and on his disillusionment with the Germany he once loved. The introduction by Ralph Giordano (pp. 11-16) expresses his concurrence with Schroeter's damning judgment on the Germans, from before the First World War to the present. Hartmut Mehringer, "Kurt Schroeter: Ein deutsches Schicksal" (pp. 83-94), chronicles Nazi anti-Jewish policy in prewar Germany and the occupied Netherlands and their bearing on Schroeter's fate. Pp. 95-118 contain "Biographische Notizen" by the editor. 1. Aufl. 118 pages : illustrations ; 20 cm
