Zum Kampf auf Leben und Tod! : das Buch vom Widerstand der Juden 1933-1945

1994

Describes Jewish resistance in Germany and in all the occupied countries, uprisings in ghettos and concentration camps, Jewish partisan groups, the parachutists from Palestine, and Jews in the Allied armies. Much of the text consists of brief biographies of resistance fighters and excerpts from memoirs, chronicles, diaries, and other writings (most of them published previously in other languages). The preface (p. 15-26) surveys sources for the study of Jewish resistance and deplores the failure of most historians of the Holocaust to make use of them; this has made possible the myth that Jews went like sheep to the slaughter. The essay by Yisrael Gutman, "Jüdischer Widerstand: Eine historische Bewertung" (p. 26-35), concurs with Lustiger's criticism of Holocaust historians; also discusses tensions between the Judenräte and the resistance, types of resistance other than military, and the difficult conditions under which resistance took place. Nathan Eck's essay "Jüdischer und europäischer Widerstand" (p. 35-40) [first published in English in the "Yad Vashem Bulletin" 8-9 (1961)], states that the Jews, unlike other Europeans, were fighting for their lives; asks what efforts were made by the non-Jewish resistance movements and those directing them from the Allied countries to sabotage the Final Solution; and condemns Jewish historians' criticism of the alleged passivity of European Jews in the Holocaust. 1.
