Pp. 1-90 describe life in the shtetl (as exemplified by Wells' hometown of Stojanów, Poland), and the celebration of Yom Kippur in the shtetl. Contends that he lost all belief in God as a result of the Holocaust, but acknowledges and describes other attitudes held by survivors.
