Un hiver en Provence
Memoirs of a French Jew (b. 1937 in Avignon), who was granted access to the local archives in Le Pontet, Vaucluse in 1990. There he discovered that French collaborators were responsible for the arrest and subsequent deportation of his mother, Sarah (b. Goldstein, 1904). Lewendel's mother was transferred via Drancy to Auschwitz with transport 76, and perished in the gas chambers. His father, Meijlech Schoeps (alias Lewendel), emigrated from Poland to Carpentras in 1930 and volunteered for the Polish regiment in France in 1940. Before the Nazi occupation he left for Switzerland, where he remained until the end of the war. Isaac Lewendel was cared for by a Jewish family (Steltzer), and then by two Christian families, Bres and Souret, respectively, during and after the war. He studied in both France and Israel before settling in the USA. Includes bibliographical references (pages 355-366). 365, [3] pages ; 22 cm.
