Vorhof der Vernichtung : Tagebuch einer Schweizer Schwester im französischen Internierungslager Rivesaltes 1941-1942
The diary of a Swiss woman who worked as a nurse in the internment camp of Rivesaltes between 1941-42, where ca. 18,000 prisoners were detained, among them Gypsies, stateless persons, and 6,307 Jews, the latter destined to be deported to death camps in Poland. Pp. 7-36 contain three introductions which testify to the importance of Bohny-Reiter's work in the camp, especially with children. She worked for the Swiss Children's Aid (Schweizer Kinderhilfe) committee, directed by Maurice Dubois, who established several homes for children in southern France. In the camp, prisoners received only 1,000 calories of food each day; many were ill and threatened with death from starvation. The committee supplied food, clothing, and medical treatment, as well as education, professional training, and culture. 1. Aufl. 167 pages : illustrations ; 21 cm
