Reading Auschwitz
Examines Holocaust memoirs by six survivors of Auschwitz: Jean Amery, Charlotte Delbo, Fania Fenelon, Szymon Laks, Primo Levi, and Sara Nomberg-Przytyk. Shows how gender, profession, nationality, ethnicity, the status of each of them in the camp, etc., color their personal stories. Reflects on the chaos of Auschwitz and on the role of the grotesque in the survivors' narratives. Compares these six narratives to those by Anne Frank and Eli Wiesel. Pp. 161-166 contain a list of book-length memoirs of Auschwitz published in English. Includes bibliographical references (pages 161-178) and index. 182 pages ; 24 cm.
