The introduction (pp. 9-51) surveys the history of the rescue of Bulgaria's 48,000 Jews during the Holocaust, examines competing interpretations, and discusses the moral question of what allows goodness to triumph. Pp. 55-137 present documents dealing with the exclusion of the Jews in December 1940, the plan to deport them in March 1943, and internment and expulsion of the Jews from Sofia in May 1943. Pp. 139-217 consist of memoirs by Dimo Kazasov, the Metropolitan Stefan, Assen Suichmezov, and Dimitar Peshev (pp. 164-217). Kazasov, Suichmezov, and Peshev have been honored by Yad Vashem as Righteous Gentiles. Includes bibliographical references (pages 53-54) and index. 221 pages ; 20 cm.
