I dilemmi e i silenzi di Pio XII
Elucidates the role and the non-intervention of Pius XII and of the Vatican hierarchy during the Shoah. Focuses on the significance of specific choices and actions. On the issue of how much the Vatican knew about the extermination of the Jews, concludes that there is no doubt that it was aware of what was happening in Europe. The Church avoided a break with Nazi Germany, speaking of the "horrors of the war" in general terms with a view to forfend future recriminations. Interprets this policy of non-intervention as part of the diplomatic game of impartiality of the Vatican in frontal wars between states: the Pope, as "the father of all", can only blame the wars, wishing that the fighting between his "sons" will end shortly.
