MS "St. Louis" : die Irrfahrt nach Kuba : Frühjahr 1939 : Kapitän Gustav Schröder rettet 906 deutsche Juden vor dem Zugriff der Nazis
Describes the journey of the ship "St. Louis", aboard which more than 900 German Jews tried to escape to Cuba in spring 1939. Despite a previous agreement, Cuban authorities refused to accept the refugees, as did the U.S. government. Captain Gustav Schröder, who was ordered to return to Germany, managed to set his passengers ashore at Antwerp. One-fourth of them were able to travel to England, while the others went to Belgium, France, and the Netherlands. Many of them fell into the hands of the Nazis and were deported to concentration camps; ca. half of them survived. Schröder was recognized as a Righteous among the Nations by Yad Vashem. Pp. 235-259 contain a list of the passengers, including the countries in which they lived after their debarkation at Antwerp. 1. Aufl. 270 pages : illustrations ; 25 cm
