Le Vatican et la Shoah, ou, Comment l'Eglise s'absout de son passé : analyse du "Document de l'Eglise de Rome sur la Shoah"

2000

Examines the Vatican document "We Remember: A Reflection on the Shoah" (1998). This document provoked various reactions, from satisfaction to indignation. Analyzes its rhetoric and asserts that the annihilation of the Jews is transformed into a religious experience. The document avoids examination of the major role of antisemitism in the Holocaust. Fidelity of the Jews to their faith is seen as a principal cause of anti-Judaism, and the Church is presented as the only important body involved in anti-Nazi resistance. Concludes that the document presents an extremely simplified analysis, in which the Church is presented as an ingenuous institution, judging antisemitism as a phenomenon in which it never took part. An analysis of a papal document published by the Vatican Commission for Religious Relations with the Jews entitled We remember, issued March 15, 1998. The document appears in the volume in French translation as Nous nous souvenons : une réflexion sur la Shoah. 155 pages ; 21 cm
