The Treblinka death camp : history, biographies, remembrance

2014

A history of the Treblinka camp, based largely on accounts of eyewitnesses - Jewish survivors, German and Ukrainian perpetrators, and Polish bystanders. Some of the accounts were obtained by Chocholáty, who interviewed survivors in the early 2000s. Other accounts were taken from testimonies at war crimes trials, memoirs, and wartime reports by Polish members of the resistance. Discusses the construction of the Treblinka I labor camp in summer 1941, its reconstruction as a death camp during Operation Reinhardt in 1942, the processes of mass murder, Jewish work brigades in the camp, the uprising in August 1943, the dismantling of the camp in August-November 1943, and the postwar war crimes trials that dealt with Treblinka. Ch. 11 (pp. 125-168), "Interviews with Treblinka Survivors", describes Chocholáty's meetings with Samuel Willenberg, Eliahu Rosenberg, and Kalman Teigman, and contains excerpts from their interviews. Ch. 17 (pp. 231-304), "Roll of Remembrance: Jewish Survivors and Victims", contains a list of survivors of Treblinka, including escapees.
