Leib Tencer Fonds

Leib Tencer was born on June 6, 1910 in Ozduticz, Poland to Abraham and Gitel (nee Krantz) Tencer. His education began in Vilna but he received his Teacher's Diploma in Lutzk, Poland. In 1941, while in Russia attending and education conference, the Soviet Union entered into the war with Germany. Tencer, stranded in Russia, taught for some time before working in a coal mine to avoid the dangerous politics of the time. In 1946, after the war, Tencer was repatriated back to Poland and left for Montreal in 1948. In 1949, Tencer began his long teaching career with Jewish Peretz School. Tencer remained with the school after the merger with Jewish People's School in 1971 and eventually became vice-principal of the Mackie Avenue branch. He also joined the teaching staff of McGill University's Jewish Studies programme in 1959. Contains documents related to the life and career of Leib Tencer, including his involvement with JPPS/Bialik, the J.I. Segal Fund, and McGill University.
